TOEBANG PERING

Item #TRI0025

A big and very rare dayak storage container from Central Borneo, from the dayak tribes living around the upper Kayan river.

The toebang pering (native name), is from before 1900 and has a huge old and dark glossy patina on the wooden stopper, decorated with tumpals and a beautifully high three-dimensional carved "circle" with all kind of figures.

The bamboo container itself also has a dark black patina and has a band all around of carved decorations just below the ratan band.

The toebang pering shows signs of use and wear from the inside and the outside.

Additional information:

In the collection of the famous Dutch expedition leader Anton Willem Nieuwenhuis (which now is in the possession of the Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde), there are three similar containers like these.

These three are the only ones of this type which are in the huge collection of the Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde, so they are very rare.

(Contact us for information and / or photos of the museum containers).
