KITANG (BATAK)

A palmwine container "Kitang", Batak / North Sumatra, 1880 or earlier.

 

Materials:

Bamboo tube with horn bottom- and mouthpiece / Big wooden stopper / Leather (part of the original carrying belt).


Dimensions:

Total length bamboo with stopper 55 cm / Stopper width 31,5 cm / Stopper height 17 cm / Bamboo height 40,5 cm / Bamboo diameter 12 cm.


Lovely feature:

The stylized Singa head carved on the stopper.


Additional Information:

Wonderfull ancient glossy patina on the stopper and the tube.

Similar types (with the red bamboo, horn pieces, similar carved stopper, and leather carrying belt) came in the Museum Volkenkunde Leiden around 1880.


Condition: 

As seen on photos (two "not working" cracks in the bamboo), if required ask for condition report.

On the left you see a Kitang hanging at the roof of a cottage.
