A battle shield, lave-lave, from the Solomon Islands.

 

Wood and wickerwork ornamented with black patterns / Good old patina / Some losses of the wickerwork and outer rim / Original handle / 86 cm high / Unrestored as seen on photos.

 

Provenance:

From the collection of the late Dr. James Spillius, well-known anthropologist. This particular shield had been collected by Dr. Spillius on one of his field trips to the Pacific islands.

His collection can be found in different museumcollections. like for instance the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture.

Several objects from his collection had been auctioned on well known auctionhouses (like Sotheby's).
