MANDAU

Item #W0089

Beautifull old style modang mandau, 1880 or earlier.

Handle: dark brown wooden handle with aso carvings and considering its age in almost perfect condition. Some old (not working) cracks which gives the old hilt a lot of character.

The wood shows a great dark glossy patina, just as the rattan (which has a small damage at one side which can be seen on the photos). The resin ring is missing, and a leather strap had been wrapped between the handle and the blade.

The handle and the blade have a firm connection.

Blade: A very heavy and thick blade (11 mm at the spine near the handle), concave and convex in shape.

Decorated with an aso dragon at the shoulder and typical design along the blade till the slope at the convex side.

At the concave side there is also a leftover visible of an aso dragon at the shoulder, but that one faded a lot during its old age.

Scabbard: No scabbard.

Length: 67,5 cm.

Provenance: Obtained directly from a family member, who has inherited it from his late great-grandfather who took it home from the Dutch Indies in 1902.
