An untouched and not restored mandau from Kenyah dayaks living at the Baram / Redjang area in Sarawak, 19th century.
Hilt:
Wooden hilt with a strong face, spirals and big tumpal motif at the back of the hilt.
The hilt has a glossy old patina and black human hair attached, some sections dyed red and yellow.
The original gutta percha ring is partly present.
Scabbard:
The scabbard shows interesting carvings at the scabbardmouth and scabbardtip.
The front piece is carved from hardwood and has a perfect old glossy patina.
Blade:
Old concave and convex blade. The blade is decorated with lots of brass dots, most of them missing due to age (which is normal on blades from this area of this age).
At the base of the concave side (the shoulder) there is engraved an aso dragon figure.
The blade has krowits and curls at the slope, and is 7mm thick at the spine at the base.
The length of the blade is 54 cm.
