KUTAI MANDAU

An untouched mandau from the east part of Borneo, Kutai area, 19th century.

Total length: 69 cm

Hilt:

Antler hilt / rattan braided winding / dyed hair around the nose / resin ring missing / age crack (not working).

Scabbard:

Wooden scabbard / rattan knots / sideknifescabbard of bark covered in animal skin / animal tooth attached at the sideknifescabbard (typically Kutai) / dyed tufts of hair (natural pigments) / a tuft of human hair / intact bi-colour rattan belt.

Blade:

Plain sturdy blade / concave and convex / 50 cm long / 8 mm thick at the base.

Sideknife: 

Present / wood, antler, horn.
