LONGWAI MANDAU

An old mandau, Longwai dayaks, Kutai area, +/- 1880 or earlier.

Total length: 64,5 cm

Hilt:

Wooden hilt / rattan braided winding / original resin ring.

Scabbard:

Wooden scabbard / wrapped rattan / original complete rattan belt.

Blade:

Plain sturdy forged blade / concave and convex / 50,5 cm long / 10 mm thick at the base.

Provenance: 

Bringback in the early 20th century by a Dutch East-Indies seafarer / directly obtained from a family member (inheritance).

A similar Longwai mandau had been collected by the famous Carl Bock before 1880, and is in the collection of the British Museum, collectionnumber As,BK.82.a
