Palembang keris, early 1800's, ex-Dutch collection.

 

Total length: 40,5 cm.

 

Hilt:

"Sea ivory" hilt / Top condition / Wonderfull glossy patina / 6cm long / Silver mendak-selut.

 

Blade:

Sturdy keris blade / Beautifull pamor / Ganja iras.

 

Sheath:

Beautifull wooden sheath / One small restoration.


Provenance:

From a Dutch collection.

 

Additional information:

By the conquest of the Dutch in 1821, the production of kerisses in the Palembang area was put to a stop, as the Dutch prohibited people in that area to wear kerisses and after that the craft quickly became extinct.

This means that most of the Palembang kerisses probably must have been produced before 1821.
