Palembang keris, early 1800's.

 

Total length: 49 cm.

 

Hilt:

Ivory with charming old age cracks / One small piece of ivory missing at the decoration at the back of the head / Glossy old patina / 7 cm long / Brass cup.

 

Blade:

Sturdy keris blade with good pamor / Perfect fit in the original scabbard.

 

Sheath:

Wooden sheath / Old patina / Small gap between the wrangka and gandar filled with brown wax (reversable).

 

Additional information:

By the conquest of the Dutch in 1821, the production of kerisses in the Palembang area was put to a stop, as the Dutch prohibited people in that area to wear kerisses and after that the craft quickly became extinct.

This means that most of the Palembang kerisses probably must have been produced before 1821.
