19th century mandau from Sarawak, Baram/Redjang area, with fantastic hilt and blade.
Hilt:
Super carved antler hilt with breath catching figure carved on top.
Handle covered in braided rattan, with silver ferrule instead of the usual resin damar ring.
Besides the busy carvings, the hilt is adorned with black and red dyed human hair.
Blade:
Shows extreme high quality, and even laminations are visible.
The outer side has many small brass inlaid dots and notched decorations at the shoulder and above the two fine grooves. The outer side is bevelling to the edge, and therefore very sharp.
The inner side of the blade has decoration at the shoulder and just below the spine.
