Mid 1800's Central-Timor sword, BELU tribe, with old tag.
Hilt:
Extremely rare albino transluctant horn hilt, with darkbrown glossy patina from age.
The hilt is representing a hornbill bird, as the eye and beak are clearly visible. It is also provided with the traditional Timorese carvings.
The hilt is transluctant, which is clearly visible under the brown patina, but very hard to photograph and show on the photos.
The hilt is 19 cm long, 5,5 cm at the widest and 3 cm thick.
Sheath:
Wooden scabbard, with glossy old patina from age, with the traditional Timorese carvings adorned.
The two slabs of wood are held together with rattan straps, and the tip with very thin brass wire.
The scabbard throat had been made out of one piece of wood.
Blade:
Sturdy blade, in uncleaned condition.
The cutting edge is sharp, and the tip is ending in a sharp stabbing point. The blade has a mark at the base.
Provenance:
The sword comes from the heritage of an Italian collector (unfortunately I was not able to find out the name because of privacy reasons).
The sword came with an old tag, written on from both sides:
"Isola di Timor, Indie Olandesi, 1860".
ADDITIONAL INFO
These swords were used by the MEO, the fiercest warriors with most war experience.
