Extremely rare and hefty klewang, Brunei Malay - English North Borneo (Sabah) Kadayan +/-1875.
HILT:
Dark wooden hilt, with floral leaf carving in the centre.
Brass ferrule, typically for this sword, with fiber wrapping around the handle for good grip.
Beautiful old patina all over, and in perfect condition!
BLADE:
Hefty laminated blade (12mm thick at the spine at the base), very sharp and with one old damage because of heavy use at the edge.
SHEATH:
Wooden sheath, with nice grain.
Horn and bone tip.
Additional Information:
These swords are extremely rare to find, and only a few are known in museum collections.
The most interesting one can be found in the Pitt Rivers museum, collectionnumber 1912.31.7.1, collected by R. Shelford himself, with the text: "Kadayan curved parang, with which Mr Shelford's cook was murdered, (B)ritish (N)orth Borneo". (The cook was murdered with it in 1905, written on the scabbard).
